Description

Arising from the medial superciliary region, the depressor supercilii is positioned deep to the medial fibers of the frontalis and corrugator supercilii and superficial to the frontal bone at the glabella and superomedial orbit. From an anterior perspective, its short muscle belly tracks inferiorly and slightly laterally toward the skin of the medial eyebrow, adjacent to the supraorbital margin and the root of the nose. Bony landmarks that anchor orientation include the frontal bone, nasion, nasal bones, and the paired orbits, with the maxilla and mandible providing inferior facial context. Small structures in the orbital roof region correspond in location to the supraorbital and supratrochlear neurovascular bundles. Functionally, the depressor supercilii draws the medial eyebrow inferiorly and contributes to glabellar and medial brow rhytids. That matters in facial plastic surgery and injectables: inaccurate placement of botulinum toxin in the glabellar complex can leave persistent medial brow depression or, conversely, unmask frontalis overactivity that elevates the lateral brow while the medial brow remains tethered. Surgeons also use the superomedial orbital rim and the expected course of the supratrochlear nerve as a safety map during brow-lift dissection and endoscopic forehead approaches.
