Description
Frontal anatomy of the adult male trunk is rendered with the body wall semi-transparent so the thoracic and abdominal viscera read in situ. Superiorly, the right and left lungs occupy the pleural cavities on either side of the mediastinum, while the heart sits centrally with its apex directed inferiorly and to the left, immediately superior to the diaphragm. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver fills the right upper quadrant under the costal margin, the stomach lies more to the left with the esophagus entering superiorly, and coils of small intestine are framed peripherally by the large intestine. Posterior structures are implied through position, with the kidneys shown bilaterally in the retroperitoneum, lateral to the vertebral column. This anterior relationship map is the one clinicians carry into the exam room. It supports surface anatomy correlations, such as why right upper quadrant pain may refer you to hepatobiliary disease while epigastric pain raises concern for gastric or pancreatic sources, and it helps explain why diaphragmatic irritation can present with shoulder pain via the phrenic nerve. Visualizing retroperitoneal kidneys behind the bowel also clarifies why renal colic can be intense without early peritoneal signs. Simple, but clinically exact.
