Description
Presented in an anterior view of the male trunk, the abdominal viscera are arranged with the liver occupying the right upper quadrant beneath the diaphragm and the stomach lying superior and left, continuous distally with the duodenum and proximal jejunum. Draped from the greater curvature of the stomach, the greater omentum descends anterior to the small-bowel loops, then reflects to the transverse colon, which runs horizontally across the upper abdomen before the colon frames the small intestine as it continues into the ascending and descending segments. Inferiorly, the sigmoid colon leads into the rectum in the midline pelvis. Pancreas and gallbladder sit in their expected positions, the pancreas retroperitoneal and transverse behind the stomach, the gallbladder tucked on the visceral surface of the right lobe of the liver. Spatial relationships in this composition matter because they mirror what you encounter during open or laparoscopic exploration of the anterior abdomen: the greater omentum is the first mobile peritoneal fold you lift to access the transverse colon and the infracolic compartment. That anterior-to-posterior layering also frames common disease patterns, from omental caking in peritoneal carcinomatosis to internal herniation and adhesive small-bowel obstruction, where dilated jejunal and ileal loops displace the colon and alter the expected peritoneal spaces.
