Description
Superficial skin and subcutaneous tissue are rendered semi-transparent to expose the palmar compartment of the male hand, with the four lumbricals highlighted in red as slender, worm-like bellies arising from the radial sides of the flexor digitorum profundus tendons. Distally, each lumbrical courses anterior to the metacarpophalangeal joint and passes toward the dorsal digital expansion, lying medial or lateral to the flexor tendons depending on the digit. Deep to this plane, the interossei occupy the intermetacarpal spaces, while the metacarpals and phalanges provide the osseous framework for the tendon paths and joint arcs. Fine relationships matter here. Lumbricals matter because they couple flexion at the metacarpophalangeal joints with extension of the interphalangeal joints via their insertion into the extensor hood, a linkage that students often understand only when they can trace tendon to expansion across a single digit. Denervation patterns map cleanly onto this view: the first and second lumbricals typically receive median nerve fibers, while the third and fourth are supplied by the deep branch of the ulnar nerve, helping explain why ulnar neuropathy or a low median nerve lesion changes intrinsic balance and produces a clawing posture.
