Description
Anteriorly, the male heart sits central in the mediastinum with the right ventricle forming most of the sternocostal surface and giving rise superiorly to the pulmonary trunk. The pulmonary trunk courses anterior to the ascending aorta before bifurcating into the right and left pulmonary arteries, while the pulmonary veins return oxygenated blood from each lung to the posteriorly placed left atrium, glimpsed here through the opened chambers. Sectioned myocardium, the pericardium, and the cardiac valves organize the inflow and outflow tracts, with the aorta ascending superiorly and slightly to the right before arching. Emphasis on the pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein pathways makes this view useful for teaching the separation of pulmonary and systemic circulations at the level of the ventricles and great vessels. It also aligns with clinical reasoning in acute pulmonary embolism, where obstruction increases right ventricular afterload and can dilate the right ventricle while the pulmonary trunk remains the key conduit to the pulmonary arterial tree. Orientation matters.
