Description
Emerging from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus, the radial nerve is traced in an anterior projection as it courses from the axilla into the proximal arm, closely related to the humerus and the shoulder girdle. Proximally, the nerve lies posterior to the axillary artery before passing inferior to the glenohumeral joint region and continuing toward the anterior aspect of the elbow. Near the lateral side of the distal arm and cubital fossa, the radial nerve is shown approaching its terminal bifurcation into the superficial branch (continuing distally toward the radial aspect of the forearm) and the deep branch, which turns laterally to enter the supinator as the posterior interosseous nerve. Bony landmarks include the ribs, scapula, humeral head, humeral shaft, and the elbow joint. This anterior relationship is the one you want when teaching radial nerve vulnerability around the distal humerus and the lateral elbow, where fractures, dislocations, or aggressive retraction can produce wrist and finger extension weakness and sensory change over the dorsolateral hand. The depiction of the impending split into superficial and deep branches also aligns with common entrapment patterns: compression of the deep branch in the radial tunnel or within the supinator (arcade of Frohse) produces motor deficits without the classic cutaneous numbness. A surgical landmark. Use this plate for upper limb anatomy lab manuals, neuroanatomy and peripheral nerve modules, and orthopaedic or hand surgery texts that need a clean map from brachial plexus origin to terminal radial nerve branches at the elbow. It also suits patient education materials for radial neuropathy after humeral shaft fracture or posterior interosseous nerve syndrome. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
