Description
Arising from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus, the thoracodorsal nerve courses inferiorly and laterally along the posterior wall of the axilla toward latissimus dorsi. An anterior approach places the clavicle superiorly with the scapula lateral and posterior, while the proximal humerus forms the glenohumeral joint just lateral to the neurovascular bundle. Running in parallel with the thoracodorsal vessels, the nerve sits deep to the axillary fat and lymphatic tissue and posterior to pectoralis major and minor. Close quarters. This perspective matters when you need to understand what is at risk during axillary dissection and posterior axillary fold surgery, where the thoracodorsal nerve and artery form a recognizable pedicle on the surface of subscapularis before disappearing into latissimus dorsi.
