Description

Centered on the anterior neck, the sternohyoid muscles appear as paired infrahyoid strap muscles running superiorly from the posterior surface of the manubrium and medial clavicle to the inferior border of the hyoid body. Superior to them sit the mandible and hyoid apparatus, while the clavicles and upper ribs form the inferior boundary of the field. Laterally, the sternocleidomastoid muscles frame the strap musculature as they descend from the mastoid region toward the sternum and clavicle. Midline relationships are clear. Surface anatomy matters here. Sternohyoid depresses the hyoid after swallowing and during phonation, and its position over the laryngeal framework makes it a key layer during anterior cervical exposure and emergency airway procedures. Small, straightforward, and frequently encountered. When you teach tracheostomy or cricothyrotomy landmarks, the infrahyoid plane is where dissection either stays clean or becomes confusing, and this anterior view helps distinguish sternohyoid from the more lateral sternothyroid and from the obliquely oriented omohyoid belly. Use this asset in head and neck anatomy modules, surgical approach figures for thyroidectomy or tracheostomy technique guides, and ENT or anesthesia teaching decks that need a fast orientation to the strap muscles in a male neck. It also fits exam prep graphics where students must identify sternohyoid relative to sternocleidomastoid, hyoid, and clavicle from the front. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
