Description

Centered beneath the mandibular symphysis, the submental vein courses within the submental triangle in the midline chin region, running superficial to the mylohyoid and closely associated with the anterior belly of the digastric on either side. Superiorly it gathers venules from the mental and sublabial territories, while inferiorly it trends toward the submandibular region to join the submandibular vein and, by extension, the facial venous system. Laterally, the vein sits just medial to the mandibular body, with the masseter and parotid-masseteric fascia forming a more lateral muscular boundary in the same anterior head and neck field. Anterior facial musculature, including orbicularis oris and nearby depressor groups, provides soft tissue context for its superficial drainage pattern. Understanding the submental vein matters when you work in the submental space, where even small-caliber vessels can complicate a clean dissection. During submental lipectomy, rhytidectomy with submental access, or chin augmentation approaches that traverse the midline, this vessel and its tributaries account for common venous oozing and postoperative ecchymosis under the chin. The anatomy also underpins lymph node examinations and incision planning for drainage of submental infections, since venous pathways and fascial planes in this region travel together. Use this illustration for gross anatomy teaching on the submental triangle, facial venous drainage, and surface anatomy landmarks of the anterior mandible in a head and neck block. It also suits operative anatomy figures for oral and maxillofacial surgery, ENT, and plastic surgery texts that need a clean anterior reference for midline submental dissection.
