Description
Seen from an inferior perspective in the anterior neck, the thyrohyoideus appears as a small, quadrangular infrahyoid muscle spanning superiorly to the hyoid bone and inferiorly to the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage. Its fibers run mainly superomedial, lying deep to the sternohyoid and omohyoid in the typical strap muscle layer, and immediately superficial to the laryngeal framework. Medially, the paired muscles approach the midline over the laryngeal prominence, while laterally they taper toward the laminae of the thyroid cartilage. Compact anatomy. This view matters because the thyrohyoideus sits at the junction of the hyoid and larynx, a corridor used in airway surgery and laryngeal frameworks. When you elevate the larynx during swallowing assessment, or expose the superior thyroid pole during thyroidectomy, this muscle marks the transition between the superficial infrahyoid plane and the thyroid cartilage itself, and it helps orient the surgeon to nearby neurovascular structures such as the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve traversing toward the thyrohyoid membrane. Misidentification can lead to poor plane selection and unnecessary bleeding from strap muscle branches. A precise landmark.
