Description
Running inferior to the cricoid cartilage, the trachea is shown from an anterior approach with its C shaped hyaline tracheal cartilages (cartilagines tracheales) stacked in series along the midline of the neck and upper thorax. Each ring forms the anterior and lateral wall, while the open posterior margin is bridged by the membranous wall containing the trachealis muscle (musculus trachealis), even if the muscle itself is only implied from this viewpoint. Superiorly, the proximal tracheal rings sit just below the laryngeal inlet; distally the rings continue toward the carina where the airway will bifurcate into the main bronchi. An anterior presentation clarifies why the trachea remains patent during respiration yet still allows posterior compliance for esophageal bolus transit.
