Description
Curving C shaped hyaline cartilage rings bracket the anterior and lateral walls of the trachea, stacked in a regular series from the inferior larynx toward the thoracic inlet. Posteriorly, each ring remains open where the trachealis muscle and fibroelastic membrane complete the wall adjacent to the esophagus. Superior to inferior, the rings form a semi rigid scaffold that keeps the airway lumen patent while permitting some posterior bulging during swallowing. Teaching the trachea without emphasizing the posterior gap invites clinical confusion. That membranous posterior wall is the plane surgeons respect during tracheostomy and tracheal resection, and it is the surface most vulnerable in iatrogenic injury when an endotracheal tube cuff is overinflated, producing pressure necrosis and later tracheal stenosis.
