Description
Centered in the upper abdomen, the corpus pancreatis (body of the pancreas) spans transversely from the neck toward the tail, positioned posterior to the stomach and anterior to the splenic vein and superior mesenteric vessels. An anterior (ventral) view typically brings the anterior surface and inferior border into clearer relief, with the head to the right of midline and the tail tapering leftward toward the splenic hilum. Along the superior border, the tortuous course of the splenic artery is often suggested, while the main pancreatic duct (ductus pancreaticus) runs longitudinally through the gland toward the neck. Focusing on the pancreatic body matters because its posterior relationships drive both symptoms and operative planning, and an anterior view helps learners orient the gland before “mentally subtracting” the stomach to understand what lies behind it. Tumors in the body commonly present late and may invade the splenic artery or splenic vein, contributing to left-sided portal hypertension and gastric varices. This is also the segment encountered in distal pancreatectomy, where control of splenic vessels and preservation of the splenic hilum (when feasible) hinge on a clear grasp of the body-to-tail transition. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and GI modules to teach pancreatic subdivisions (caput, collum, corpus, cauda) and to support surgical education materials on distal pancreatic resection, pancreatic duct anatomy, and patterns of spread in pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
