Description
Visible in this internal cross section are the lumen and wall of the pulmonary trunk (truncus pulmonalis) at the point where it divides into the right and left pulmonary arteries. From an anterior perspective, the bifurcation sits superior to the right ventricular outflow tract and pulmonary valve, with the right pulmonary artery coursing laterally to the right and the left pulmonary artery turning laterally to the left toward its respective hilum. The posterior margin of the bifurcation relates closely to the left main bronchus and the concavity of the aortic arch, while the anterior wall of the trunk remains the dominant surface presented to the viewer. A cross-sectional cut at this level matters because it clarifies what the interventionalist or surgeon is navigating when working across the pulmonary valve and into the main pulmonary artery. Branch pulmonary artery stenosis, post-repair narrowing after congenital heart surgery, and chronic thromboembolic disease all alter luminal caliber and symmetry at or just distal to the bifurcation, and those changes guide balloon angioplasty, stent selection, or endarterectomy planning. Orientation is everything. An anterior reference helps avoid left-right reversal when correlating with CT pulmonary angiography, catheter angiograms, or intraoperative findings.
