Description
Arising from the right ventricle, the root of the pulmonary trunk (radix trunci pulmonalis) is shown in anterior aspect at the arterial cone (conus arteriosus) where it courses superiorly and slightly leftward toward the pulmonary valve. Immediately posterior and inferior lies the right ventricular outflow tract, while the vessel’s anterior surface faces the sternum and the pericardial cavity. Proximally, the pulmonary trunk begins at the base of the heart, with its lumen defined by the level of the semilunar cusps and the sinuses at the root. Anterior orientation matters here because the pulmonary trunk is the most anterior of the great arteries as it exits the heart, a relationship that helps learners distinguish it from the ascending aorta and explains why it often dominates the operative field after median sternotomy. This is the corridor for right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction and pulmonary valve procedures, including repair of congenital lesions such as tetralogy of Fallot and relief of valvular pulmonary stenosis.
