Description
Arising from the right ventricular outflow tract (conus arteriosus), the pulmonary trunk courses superiorly and slightly leftward, positioned anterior to the ascending aorta before it bifurcates into the right and left pulmonary arteries. Semi-transparent rendering allows the right ventricle to be appreciated anteriorly, with the left ventricle forming the left inferolateral contour and the atria sitting superior and posterior to their respective ventricles. The pulmonary valve sits at the base of the trunk, just superior to the interventricular septum and proximal to the sinuses of the great vessel. Color coding distinguishes deoxygenated flow through the pulmonary circuit from oxygenated systemic outflow. Anterior orientation makes the spatial relationship between the pulmonary trunk and ascending aorta immediately clear, a point that matters when teaching outflow tract anatomy and when interpreting cross-sectional imaging of the mediastinum. This is the setup for classic congenital and acquired problems: pulmonary valve stenosis with post-stenotic dilatation of the trunk, or transposition of the great arteries where the pulmonary trunk and aorta arise from the wrong ventricles and their anterior-posterior relationship reverses. It also maps cleanly onto operative views during median sternotomy, where the pulmonary trunk and right ventricular infundibulum are encountered early during repair of right ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Cardiology and gross anatomy courses can use this plate to connect chamber morphology, valve position, and great vessel branching in a single frame, while echo and CT/MR teaching files can pair it with parasternal short-axis and axial mediastinal slices to reinforce landmarks.
