Running obliquely from left to right across the superior mediastinum, the left brachiocephalic vein (vena brachiocephalica sinistra, innominate vein) forms posterior to the left sternoclavicular joint from the union of the left internal jugular vein and left subclavian vein. It courses anterior to the branches of the aortic arch and superior to the left pulmonary artery, then joins the right brachiocephalic vein to create the superior vena cava to the right of midline. Along its cranial margin, tributaries such as the inferior thyroid vein and thymic or mediastinal veins may enter as it passes deep to the manubrium.
