Description
Centered on the left lung hilum, the anterior pulmonary vein (left superior pulmonary vein) courses anterior and inferior to the left pulmonary artery while the left main bronchus lies posterior, forming the classic hilar arrangement (vein anterior, artery superior, bronchus posterior). Tributaries from the upper lobe and lingula converge as they pass medialward toward the left atrium, with the pericardium and left atrial wall providing the immediate posterior and medial backdrop. Superiorly, the trachea and carina sit in the upper mediastinum, while the great vessels frame the field, including the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk with their proximal branches. Color coding distinguishes pulmonary venous return from adjacent arterial channels. Anterior pulmonary venous anatomy matters because this vessel is a fixed landmark during left upper lobectomy and lingular segmentectomy, where incomplete fissures can make the pulmonary artery harder to expose safely.
