Description
Suspended against a blood-red field, a single circulating basophil is rendered in close-up with a lobulated, purple-stained nucleus partially obscured by dense metachromatic granules. Irregular, spiculated contours along the plasma membrane suggest surface microvilli and degranulation-related membrane remodeling, while the surrounding plasma space implies an intravascular setting rather than a tissue mast cell niche. Granules dominate the peripheral cytoplasm, with the nucleus displaced slightly off-center, a common teaching point when distinguishing basophils from other granulocytes and from mast cells. Basophils matter because they bridge routine hematology and immediate hypersensitivity. IgE bound to Fc epsilon RI on the basophil surface cross-links on allergen exposure, triggering rapid release of histamine, leukotrienes, and cytokines that contribute to urticaria, bronchospasm, and anaphylaxis.
