Anterior sectioning through the heart (cor) exposes the interatrial septum superiorly and the interventricular septum inferiorly, partitioning the right-sided chambers from the left. The septum secundum and septum primum are implied at the atrial level around the fossa ovalis region, while the muscular interventricular septum thickens toward the apex and transitions superiorly into the thinner membranous septum beneath the aortic root. Right ventricle lies anterior to the left ventricle in this cut, so the septal contour is read from the anterior surface backward. Clear midline anatomy. Septal anatomy matters because small defects sit in predictable places. Membranous ventricular septal defects cluster near the atrioventricular conduction axis at the inferior margin of the membranous septum, close to the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve and the noncoronary cusp region of the aortic valve, so repairs risk complete heart block. Atrial septal defects around the fossa ovalis (secundum ASDs) follow a different embryologic failure than primum defects near the atrioventricular valves, and that distinction drives both echocardiographic interpretation and surgical planning.
