Description
Anterior section through the adult female urinary bladder reveals a sac-like bladder diverticulum protruding from the bladder wall, creating a narrow neck that communicates with the main vesical lumen. The mucosa (urothelium) lines both the bladder cavity and the diverticular pouch, while the detrusor muscle is thinned and displaced around the outpouching. Superiorly, the dome (apex) of the bladder contours toward the peritoneal reflection; inferiorly, the trigone region sits closer to the bladder neck, with the diverticulum positioned within the anterior bladder wall in this cross-section. Depth relationships are clear. Bladder diverticula matter because they behave as low-flow reservoirs that can retain urine, a setup for recurrent cystitis, post-void residual, and calculus formation within the pouch. In women, acquired diverticula often relate to chronic outlet obstruction or dysfunctional voiding and can coexist with stress urinary incontinence, making preoperative mapping of the diverticular neck and its proximity to the bladder neck clinically decisive.
