Deep to it, the tendons of tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, and extensor digitorum longus course distally toward the tarsus and metatarsus, with the extensor digitorum brevis arising more distally on the dorsolateral calcaneus. The talus and calcaneus anchor the hindfoot, while the metatarsals and phalanges extend anteriorly, clarifying how the retinaculum relates to the transition from ankle to midfoot.
