Description
Oriented in lateral alignment, the left atrium lies posterior and superior to the thick-walled left ventricle, with the apex cordis projecting inferolaterally. The mitral valve sits between the chambers, its leaflets tethered by chordae tendineae to papillary muscles arising from the ventricular wall, while the aortic valve occupies a more central and superior position at the left ventricular outflow tract. Portions of the interatrial septum and interventricular septum are included in section, clarifying the medial boundaries that separate left-sided from right-sided cavities.
