Description
Viewed in lateral section, the left atrium lies posterior and superior to the left ventricle, with the mitral valve (valva atrioventricularis sinistra) forming the oblique junction between the two chambers. Inferiorly, the thick left ventricular myocardium tapers toward the apex cordis, while the left ventricular outflow tract ascends anterosuperiorly toward the aortic valve (valva aortae). The aortic root sits superior to the ventricular cavity, separated from the mitral apparatus by the fibrous aorto-mitral continuity; nearby, the interventricular septum forms the medial boundary of the left ventricle in section. Orientation is intuitive. Apex points inferolaterally. This lateral conformation is the cleanest teaching view for linking valve anatomy to flow direction and pressure load on the left heart. Mitral regurgitation becomes easier to conceptualize when you can trace the relationship of the valve plane to the left atrium and to the papillary muscle-chordae complex (even when chordae tendineae are only implied), and aortic stenosis makes sense when the narrowing is placed at the ventricular outflow rather than at the chamber itself. Surgeons also think in these relationships during aortic valve replacement or mitral valve repair, where the proximity of the aortic root to the anterior mitral leaflet influences suture placement and risk to the conduction system along the membranous septum.
