Under high magnification, clustered conidia (asexual spores) dominate the field as rounded to ovoid elements with a rough, verrucous surface texture, rendered in purple by false-color processing. Yellow hyphae weave between spore masses, forming branching, septate filaments that represent the vegetative mycelium and its sites of conidiation. Spore clusters sit adjacent to, and partially supported by, the filament network, making the spore-bearing zones read as more superficial while the hyphal meshwork extends around and between them. Scale is microscopic. Epicoccum is commonly encountered as an environmental mold and allergen source, and its spore morphology is one of the first checkpoints in laboratory recognition when a culture plate shows pigmented colonies.
