Description

Arising from the maxillary nerve (V2) in the pterygopalatine fossa, the zygomatic nerve enters the orbit through the inferior orbital fissure, coursing along the lateral orbital wall on the deep surface of the periorbita. It runs lateral to the optic nerve and globe, then divides into the zygomaticotemporal and zygomaticofacial nerves as it approaches the zygomatic bone, with the zygomaticotemporal branch turning superiorly toward the temporal fossa. Nearby you can expect the lateral rectus and inferior rectus region, the orbital apex, and the bony margins of the fissure and greater wing of the sphenoid to frame the nerve’s trajectory. Branches are rendered in yellow against the cut cranial section of the adult male skull. This lateral orbital perspective clarifies a frequent point of confusion in head and neck teaching: V2 does not enter the cranial cavity yet supplies the midface through the orbit and facial foramina. The zygomatic nerve is also the key conduit for postganglionic parasympathetic fibers from the pterygopalatine ganglion to reach the lacrimal nerve (V1) via a communicating branch, so surgical disruption around the inferior orbital fissure or zygomatic bone can contribute to lacrimal gland hyposecretion and lateral orbital sensory loss.
