Description
Cut through the lateral orbit, the zygomatic nerve is traced as it courses along the lateral wall and roof of the orbital cavity after entering from the maxillary division (V2), with its small communicans leaving the nerve to reach the lacrimal nerve (V1) near the superolateral quadrant of the globe. The eyeball occupies the anterior orbit, with the cornea and iris anterior to the sclera, while the optic nerve exits posteriorly toward the optic canal. Surrounding osseous landmarks typically include the zygomatic bone laterally and the frontal bone superiorly, with the zygomatico-orbital foramen region implied along the lateral orbital wall. Small-caliber neurovascular bundles run in parallel channels. Tight anatomy. For teaching trigeminal anatomy, the communicant branch matters because it explains how postganglionic parasympathetic secretomotor fibers from the pterygopalatine ganglion reach the lacrimal gland: they hitchhike on the zygomatic nerve and then cross via the communicans to the lacrimal nerve before turning anteriorly. That pathway is clinically relevant in lateral orbital trauma, zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures, and surgical approaches to the lateral orbit, where injury can produce altered sensation over the prominence of the cheek (zygomaticofacial territory) and reduced tearing if the lacrimal route is interrupted. This view also clarifies why symptoms can span V1 and V2 distributions without a primary intracranial lesion.
