Description
Sectioned in the sagittal plane and viewed from the right lateral aspect, the male thoracic cavity frames the heart between the anterior ribs and the posterior vertebral column, with the right lung draped laterally and the diaphragm forming the inferior boundary over the hepatic dome. Coronary arteries course across the epicardial surface, with the right coronary artery running in the right atrioventricular groove toward the crux and giving marginal branches along the acute margin, while the left coronary artery arises from the left aortic sinus and divides into the anterior interventricular branch (LAD) and circumflex artery in the left atrioventricular groove. Superficial coronary veins accompany these arterial tracks and converge toward the posterior coronary sinus in the atrioventricular sulcus. The ascending aorta, pulmonary trunk, and great cardiac inflow to the right atrium anchor orientation, with the trachea and esophagus descending posterior to the heart. This lateral sagittal relationship matters when you need to teach or plan around posterior coronary drainage and the proximity of the coronary sinus to adjacent structures.
