Description
Angled from an inferior viewpoint in left lateral perspective, the left lung is presented with emphasis on the lingular segment (segmenta lingularia superior et inferior) projecting anteroinferiorly from the superior lobe. Superior to it, the apical region rises toward the apex, while the diaphragmatic surface forms the base, concave to match the left hemidiaphragm. Medially, the visceral (mediastinal) surface converges toward the hilum, where the pulmonary artery, pulmonary veins, and left main bronchus would enter and exit in close relation to the cardiac impression. Clinically, the lingula matters because it behaves like the right middle lobe in both anatomy and disease distribution, and it is a frequent site of dependent atelectasis and infection in patients with impaired clearance or prolonged recumbency. The inferior view is a practical teaching angle for correlating the lung base with the diaphragm and pleura, and for reinforcing how lingular pathology can silhouette the left heart border on chest radiography when adjacent to the pericardium.
