Description

Elongated and dorsoventrally flattened, the trematode body is outlined by a smooth tegument, with paired intestinal caeca running longitudinally and branching toward the lateral margins. An anterior oral sucker surrounds the mouth, while a ventral sucker (acetabulum) sits inferior to it on the ventral surface, anchoring the parasite to host epithelium. Centrally, a coiled uterus and associated reproductive ducts occupy much of the parenchyma, with vitelline glands distributed laterally and the ootype and Mehlis’ gland complex situated near the midline. Posteriorly, lobulated testes and an anterior ovary align along the longitudinal axis, with excretory canals converging toward a terminal excretory pore. Orientation matters with liver flukes because the arrangement of suckers, gut, and reproductive organs underpins both species identification and pathophysiology in hepatobiliary disease. In Fasciola hepatica and Clonorchis sinensis infection, adult worms reside in the biliary tree, and the ventral sucker and tegumental surface specializations relate directly to mucosal irritation, cholangitis, and the pigment stone formation seen in chronic clonorchiasis; the dense reproductive tract explains the high egg burden used for stool ova and parasite diagnosis.
