Description
Anteriorly, the fluke’s conical forebody (cephalic cone) tapers toward an oral sucker that surrounds the mouth, while a ventral sucker (acetabulum) sits on the ventral surface just posterior to it for firm attachment to biliary epithelium. From the pharynx, the esophagus divides into paired intestinal ceca that course posteriorly and branch laterally through much of the parenchyma. More posteriorly, a coiled uterus and vitelline follicles occupy the mid to lateral fields, with paired testes and an ovary arranged along the central axis in typical trematode fashion. Bilateral symmetry is obvious. For hepatobiliary parasitology, this arrangement matters because the suckers and tegument define how trematodes anchor and feed within the biliary tree, and the branching ceca explain why flukes lack an anus and rely on a blind gut. Clinicians and educators often contrast this internal plan with planarian anatomy, but the clinical story is different: liver flukes such as Fasciola hepatica and Clonorchis sinensis drive cholangitis, biliary obstruction, pigment stone formation, and, in chronic infection, cholangiocarcinoma risk (classically with clonorchiasis). Identification hinges on body shape and organ topology as much as on eggs in stool or bile.
