Description
Posteriorly, the trachea is defined by a stacked series of C shaped cartilagines tracheales, each ring curving anterolaterally while remaining open along the dorsal midline where the membranous wall spans between cartilage ends. Bridging those free posterior ends, the trachealis muscle lies in the transverse plane and sits immediately anterior to the esophagus, a relationship that becomes apparent when you track the airway inferiorly toward the thoracic inlet. The individual rings align in a cranio caudal sequence, with subtle variation in height and overlap that explains the trachea’s combination of flexibility and resistance to collapse. A posterior view matters when you need to teach or plan around the noncartilaginous portion of the airway. During tracheostomy and open tracheal surgery, the surgeon depends on the rigidity of the anterior rings while respecting the posterior membranous wall, because overpenetration can injure the adjacent esophagus or create a tracheoesophageal fistula.
