Description
Anterior sectional anatomy of the stomach wall is rendered to separate the gross gastric areas (areae gastricae, gastric fields) on the mucosal surface from the deeper layers. Low mucosal ridges outline each area, while the intervening shallow grooves converge toward the foveolae gastricae (gastric pits) that open centrally into the glandular mucosa. Beneath the mucosa, the lamina muscularis mucosae forms a thin demarcation over the submucosa, with the muscularis externa lying posteriorly relative to the cut surface. Regional patterning of areae gastricae is a practical way to teach that the stomach is not a uniform secretory sheet, even before you get to cell types and glands in the fundus, corpus, and antrum. Endoscopically, these fields correspond to the fine mosaic you look for when assessing gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, or early gastric carcinoma, and loss or distortion of the pit pattern can steer biopsy strategy.
