Description
Posteriorly, the superficial lymphatic vessels form longitudinal channels along the upper limb and trunk that converge toward the axillary lymph nodes, while deeper collectors track with the paravertebral and posterior intercostal pathways toward the thoracic duct. Cervical lymph nodes cluster inferior to the occipital region and along the posterior triangle of the neck, with paired supraclavicular nodes positioned superior to the clavicles at the thoracic inlet. In the lower body, lymphatics from the gluteal region and posterior thigh course toward the superficial and deep inguinal lymph nodes, then continue proximally to the iliac chains. Left upper quadrant placement of the spleen provides a key visceral landmark, while the vertebral column and posterior ribs orient the mediastinal trajectory of the major ducts. A rear view clarifies how lymph from the back, scalp, and posterior trunk reaches the deep nodal basins that matter in staging malignancy and planning radiation fields, where misjudging drainage across the midline can change target volumes. The relationship of axillary nodes to the posterior axillary fold and scapular region also supports teaching of sentinel node mapping in breast cancer, including why posterior (subscapular) nodes may receive drainage from the back and lateral thoracic wall.
