Description
Running from the atlas-axis complex inferiorly to the lumbosacral junction, the vertebral column is presented with stacked vertebral bodies separated by blue intervertebral discs, emphasizing the fibrocartilaginous symphysis between adjacent levels. Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions follow the expected lordotic and kyphotic curves, with the sacrum and coccyx forming the terminal segments. Each disc is organized around a central nucleus pulposus surrounded by the concentric annulus fibrosus, positioned anterior to the vertebral arch and posterior to the anterior longitudinal ligament. Posteriorly, the spinal canal aligns behind the vertebral bodies. Disc anatomy matters because it explains both motion and failure. The annulus fibrosus resists torsion and shear during rotation and flexion, while the nucleus pulposus transmits compressive load across the endplates, so disc desiccation and fissuring predictably shift stress to the facet (zygapophyseal) joints and contribute to degenerative spondylosis.
