Description
Presented from a superior aspect, the tibial plateau forms the bony floor for both semilunar fibrocartilages of the knee joint. Medially, the medial meniscus appears more C shaped and spans a smaller portion of the articular surface, with its thicker peripheral border lying adjacent to the tibial rim and its thinner free edge directed centrally toward the intercondylar area. Laterally, the lateral meniscus reads as more circular and covers more of the lateral tibial condyle, framing the intercondylar region where the meniscal horns anchor. Knee clinicians care about this top down relationship because meniscal morphology and tibial attachment patterns predict tear behavior and symptoms. The medial meniscus, with its firmer capsular and tibial attachments and relative restriction during flexion and rotation, is the common site for longitudinal and bucket handle tears that can mechanically block extension and complicate acute anterior cruciate ligament injury patterns.
