Description
Seen from the medial side of an adult male knee, the medial meniscus sits interposed between the medial femoral condyle superiorly and the medial tibial plateau inferiorly, forming a crescentic wedge of fibrocartilage. Its peripheral border is thick and convex where it blends with the joint capsule and the deep layer of the tibial (medial) collateral ligament, while the free inner margin tapers to a thin, delicate edge facing the intercondylar region. Smooth hyaline articular cartilage caps the opposing femoral and tibial surfaces, framing the meniscal body in profile. Orientation is clear. Femur above, tibia below. A medial profile is the clearest way to teach why the meniscus is shaped for load sharing, with a broad vascularized outer third and an avascular inner two thirds, a distinction that maps directly onto healing potential after injury. Clinically, this is the meniscus most often torn with a valgus force and external rotation, and its capsular and MCL attachments explain why combined MCL sprain and medial meniscal injury can occur in the same event. The thick peripheral rim also helps explain meniscal extrusion on weight-bearing MRI in degenerative disease and its association with medial compartment osteoarthritis.
