Description
Running along the midline from the cervical spine through the thoracic and lumbar regions to the sacrum and coccyx, the posterior elements of the vertebral column frame the intervertebral discs seated between adjacent vertebral bodies. Each disc is positioned anterior to the vertebral canal and posterior to the vertebral bodies’ anterior margins, with the posterior annulus fibrosus forming a gentle convex contour toward the spinal cord channel. Superiorly, disc spaces are smaller in the cervical region, widen through the lumbar levels, and terminate at the lumbosacral junction where L5 to S1 commonly appears as the most angulated segment. Blue disc coloration separates the stacked vertebrae clearly. Posterior disc contour matters because most clinically meaningful disc pathology declares itself posterolaterally, where the annulus is thinner and reinforced only by the posterior longitudinal ligament along the vertebral bodies inside the canal. Herniations at L4 to L5 and L5 to S1 often compress traversing nerve roots, producing classic radicular patterns, while cervical disc protrusions can narrow the canal and contribute to myelopathy in the setting of spondylosis. Subtle. But teachable. Use this artwork in spine anatomy courses to distinguish disc spaces from zygapophysial joints and posterior arches, and in clinical education materials explaining degenerative disc disease, posterolateral herniation mechanisms, or the rationale behind posterior and posterolateral decompressive approaches. It also fits well in textbooks and patient-facing diagrams that need a clean posterior orientation without the distraction of visceral anatomy.
