Description
Posterior truncal anatomy is rendered with a semi-transparent soft tissue envelope to orient the upper abdominal viscera within a female body habitus. The liver occupies the right upper quadrant immediately inferior to the right hemidiaphragm, its superior surface conforming to the diaphragmatic dome and its right lobe extending laterally under the costal margin while approaching the midline at the epigastrium. Deep and slightly inferior, the kidneys sit retroperitoneally on either side of the vertebral column, with the right kidney positioned a little more inferior than the left because of the hepatic mass, and the renal hila directed anteromedially toward the great vessels. This posterior perspective matters because it clarifies the liver’s relationship to the diaphragm and posterior abdominal wall, the same anatomy that determines why right basal pleurisy or a subphrenic abscess can refer pain to the shoulder via the phrenic nerve. It also frames the practical reason the right kidney is lower and more vulnerable to posterior flank trauma, and why percutaneous renal access and posterior approaches to retroperitoneal structures must account for the inferior margin of the liver on the right.
