Description
Posterior view of an adult female torso renders the liver in situ beneath the right hemidiaphragm, occupying the right hypochondrium and extending medially toward the epigastrium. The right lobe lies lateral to the falciform ligament, while the left lobe tapers across the midline, its anterior margin approaching the xiphoid region. Superiorly the hepatic dome conforms to the diaphragm; inferiorly the visceral surface relates to the gastric region on the left and the right renal fossa and hepatic flexure of the colon on the right. A translucent integument effect preserves external back landmarks while keeping the upper abdominal viscera legible. A posterior, through-body presentation helps learners reconcile surface topography with the liver’s true three-dimensional position, which is often misunderstood when only anterior abdominal plates are used. This orientation is clinically relevant when discussing referred pain to the right shoulder via diaphragmatic irritation (phrenic nerve) from subphrenic abscess or perihepatitis, and when explaining why posterior basal lung processes or pleural effusions can abut the hepatic dome.
