Description
Across the anterior palm, the superficial palmar venous arch is presented as a curved venous channel spanning the distal palm, superficial to the palmar aponeurosis and volar to the metacarpals, with tributary digital venules converging from the fingers. Medially, the arch communicates with veins from the ulnar side of the hand, while laterally it approaches the thenar region, where superficial veins often anastomose toward the radial aspect. Proximal to the arch, superficial veins track toward the wrist crease, where they join larger superficial channels that continue into the forearm. Orientation is in anatomical position, with the digits superior and the wrist inferior. Surface venous anatomy in the palm matters when you are planning percutaneous access, managing traumatic lacerations, or teaching why venous bleeding in the hand can be deceptively brisk despite the superficial plane. Small transverse connections between the common palmar digital veins can maintain back-bleeding even after proximal compression. Expect variation. The superficial palmar venous arch is less consistent than the superficial palmar arterial arch, and the relationship to the thenar and hypothenar eminences influences where superficial venous branches are encountered during carpal tunnel release, trigger finger surgery, and palmar fasciectomy for Dupuytren disease.
