Description
Running transversely across the distal palm, the superficial palmar arch is shown as an arterial arcade lying just deep to the palmar aponeurosis and superficial to the long flexor tendons and lumbricals. Ulnarly, the arch continues from the ulnar artery after it enters the hand superficial to the flexor retinaculum, then sweeps laterally toward the thenar side where it commonly anastomoses with the superficial palmar branch of the radial artery. Several common palmar digital arteries arise from the convex distal border of the arch and course distally in the intermetacarpal spaces to become proper palmar digital arteries along the sides of the fingers. Veins accompany the arterial channels superficially, and the palmar cutaneous branches and digital nerves are positioned close enough to matter. Anterior emphasis makes the topography clear for procedures that risk iatrogenic injury. This is the vascular map that explains why a laceration across the distal palmar crease can bleed briskly even when one forearm artery remains patent, and it frames the logic of Allen testing before radial artery cannulation or harvest. Surgical release of Dupuytren contracture, trigger finger exposure near the A1 pulley, and palmar fasciectomy all intersect this plane. Small distances matter here.
