Description
Running transversely across the proximal palm, the deep palmar arch is shown resting on the bases of the metacarpals and the interosseous muscles, deep to the long flexor tendons and lumbricals. Laterally, the arch is typically completed by the radial artery after it passes between the heads of the first dorsal interosseous, while medially it anastomoses with the deep branch of the ulnar artery near the hook of hamate. From its convex distal border, palmar metacarpal arteries course distally in the intermetacarpal spaces to join the common palmar digital arteries. Relations are tight. Depth matters. Clinically, this anterior projection clarifies why lacerations at the mid to distal palm can produce brisk hemorrhage even when the superficial palmar arch remains intact, because the deep palmar arch sits protected but not inaccessible against the metacarpal bases. Hand surgeons and interventionalists also reference this anatomy when planning radial artery harvest, evaluating traumatic arterial injury, or interpreting Doppler and angiographic flow patterns after Allen testing, since completion of the arch governs collateral perfusion to the digits.
