Description
Centered on the lateral orbit of an adult male skull, the lacrimal artery is traced from the ophthalmic artery along the superior aspect of the globe toward the lacrimal gland, then followed as its zygomatic branch turns laterally toward the zygomatic bone. Near the frontozygomatic region the vessel runs close to the lateral orbital wall, approaching small foramina at the zygomaticoorbital surface before leaving the orbit to anastomose on the face. Surrounding osseous landmarks include the orbital rim, zygomatic bone, maxilla, nasal bones, and adjacent cranial vault, with cervical vertebrae continuing inferiorly in the same plate. Small veins and slender nerve trajectories are suggested in parallel, consistent with orbital neurovascular topography. Tight anatomy. Attention to the zygomatic branch matters when you need to teach or plan how the lacrimal artery contributes to periorbital and malar perfusion through transosseous exits, a point that explains why bleeding can track unexpectedly during lateral orbitotomy, zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture repair, or deep dissection near the frontozygomatic suture. The course also provides a practical map for understanding collateral flow between the ophthalmic artery system and superficial facial vessels, and why embolization or traumatic injury in the orbit can have cutaneous consequences over the cheek and temple.
