Description

Arising from the lacrimal artery near the superolateral orbit, the zygomatic branch courses anteriorly and laterally toward the zygomatic bone, running deep to the lateral fibers of orbicularis oculi and along the lateral orbital margin. Surrounding facial musculature is presented in anatomical position, with temporalis superiorly in the temporal fossa, masseter covering the lateral ramus of the mandible, and zygomaticus major and minor crossing obliquely from the zygomatic bone toward the upper lip and oral commissure. Portions of the bony orbit and adjacent skull provide landmarks, helping orient the vessel in relation to the lateral canthus and zygomatic arch. For orbital and midface work, this small artery matters out of proportion to its caliber. The lacrimal artery is a branch of the ophthalmic artery, so the zygomatic branch represents a carotid system contribution to the lateral orbital region and zygoma, with potential anastomoses to facial and superficial temporal territories. Bleeding from vessels along the lateral orbital rim can complicate lateral canthotomy, transconjunctival or subciliary approaches to the zygomaticomaxillary complex, and exposure for orbital floor and lateral wall fracture repair. Small vessel, real nuisance. Use this anterior head and neck vascular illustration to teach orbital arterial branches in gross anatomy, ophthalmology, and maxillofacial surgery courses, or to support figures in papers on orbital trauma approaches, periocular flap design, or complications of filler injection in the peri-orbital and malar regions. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
