Description
Viewed laterally, the osseous framework of the male foot is laid out from the posterior calcaneus and talus to the distal phalanges of the toes, with articular cartilage indicated along each joint surface. Anterior to the talus, the navicular leads into the three cuneiforms and cuboid, which in turn align with metatarsals I through V and the proximal, middle, and distal phalanges (the hallux typically lacking a middle phalanx). Lateral column anatomy reads cleanly in this perspective, with the cuboid and fifth metatarsal projecting inferiorly and laterally relative to the more medial first ray. Clear bony contours. A lateral bony view matters because it matches how clinicians and educators think about the longitudinal arch and hindfoot alignment, anchoring landmarks like the calcaneal tuberosity, talar head, and the base of the fifth metatarsal in one continuous profile. That fifth metatarsal base is a frequent fracture site, with avulsion fractures at the tuberosity and more proximal Jones fractures carrying different healing risks and management decisions.
