Shown in lateral profile, the paired eighth ribs (costae VIII) arc anteroinferiorly from their vertebral attachments to the costal margin, where each rib’s costal cartilage typically joins the cartilage of rib VII rather than reaching the sternum directly. Posteriorly, the head of the eighth rib articulates with the bodies of T7 and T8 at the costovertebral joint, while the tubercle meets the transverse process of T8 at the costotransverse joint; the shaft then sweeps laterally and anteriorly with the costal groove along its inferior internal border. Adjacent landmarks of the thoracic cage and spine remain visible, including the thoracic vertebral column transitioning toward the lumbar vertebrae, with the sacrum and coccyx inferiorly. Rib VIII sits at the transition from true to false ribs, so its cartilage-to-cartilage connection defines the lower contour and mechanics of the costal margin during respiration.
