Description
Sagittal section through an adult male head exposes the midline cranial cavity with the cerebrum superiorly, the brainstem continuous with the cervical spinal cord inferiorly, and the cerebellum positioned posteroinferior to the occipital lobes. Along the inferior surface of the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis, the inferior cerebellar veins are traced posteriorly toward their drainage into the transverse sinus and sigmoid sinus at the posterolateral cranial vault. Surrounding osseous landmarks include the mandible with dentition anteriorly, the zygomatic bone lateral to the orbit, and the calvarium and cranial base framing the posterior fossa. Blue venous channels contrast against the pink parenchyma. Clear midline anatomy. Mapping the inferior cerebellar venous outflow to the transverse and sigmoid sinuses matters when you are teaching posterior fossa venous drainage or thinking through complications of dural venous sinus thrombosis, where sigmoid sinus occlusion can impair cerebellar and brainstem venous return.
