Description
Seen from a superior aspect through a cranial section, the paired orbits sit anteroinferior to the anterior cranial fossa, with the nasal cavity in the midline and the roof of each orbit formed by frontal bone. Within each globe, the vorticose veins (venae vorticosae) emerge from the choroid as a symmetric quartet and course posteriorly toward the sclera, positioned roughly equidistant around the equator of the eyeball. Medial orbital structures cluster near the optic canal, while vascular channels and small neurovascular bundles track toward the superior orbital fissure at the orbital apex. Vorticose veins matter because they define the dominant outflow pathway of the uveal tract, and their position near the globe’s equator is a practical landmark when teaching venous drainage of the choroid and ciliary body. In ocular surgery, they explain why scleral buckling, encircling bands, or posterior segment dissection can provoke brisk choroidal bleeding or suprachoroidal hemorrhage when a vortex vein is torn at its scleral exit. They also help connect orbit anatomy to pathways of venous spread, since uveal and orbital venous channels can communicate with the superior and inferior ophthalmic veins and ultimately the cavernous sinus.
