Description
Centered on the posterior cranial fossa, the inferior petrosal sinus is traced as a paired dural venous channel running in the petro-occipital fissure from the cavernous sinus toward the jugular foramen. Superior to it lie the petrous parts of the temporal bones and the clivus of the occipital bone, while laterally the groove approaches the jugular bulb region at the petrojugular junction. From a top-down calvarial removal, the superior sagittal sinus and confluence of sinuses lead into the transverse sinuses and sigmoid sinuses, which curve inferolaterally toward the same jugular foramina but along a more posterior, S-shaped course. Bone landmarks such as the internal acoustic meatus, hypoglossal canal vicinity, and multiple emissary foramina are readable on the inner table. Small but exact. This relationship matters because the inferior petrosal sinus is the most direct venous egress from the cavernous sinus to the internal jugular vein, and it sits where skull base pathology and procedural access intersect.
